William McKinley Campaign Buttons. Welcome to the William McKinley campaign buttons section on campaignbuttons-etc.com. William McKinley , a Republican from Ohio, was elected the 25th President of the United States in November of 1896. Elected with McKinley was his Vice President Garret Hobart. In 1899, Hobart died. At the Republican National Convention in 1900, Theodore Roosevelt joined McKinley on the GOP ticket, which won in November of that year. In September of 1901, McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo, New York where upon Theodore Roosevelt became President. Pictured here are William McKinley campaign buttons from his 1896 and 1900 president campaigns. As McKinley had two vice presidents , McKinley buttons that feature Hobart can be identified as being from 1896 , and McKinley Roosevelt campaign buttons can be dated to the 1900 election.
