Charles Evans Hughes Campaign Buttons. In 1916 Charles Evans Hughes was the Republican Party nominee for president. Hughes ,who's presidential campaign slogan was "America First and America Efficient" lost the election to President Woodrow Wilson.  Hughes held many government posts in his life including Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1910 – 1916 and later United States Secretary of State from 1921 – 1925. Herbert Hoover in 1930 appointed Hughes to be Chief Justice of Supreme Court of the United States, a post he held until 1941.
