While the 1964 republican ticket of Barry Goldwater for President and Bill Miller for Vice President was not successful, it is considered to be the foundation on which the modern conservative movement is built upon.   Many of Barry Goldwater's 1964 campaign buttons feature his trademark dark rimmed glasses. Goldwater won his first political office when he was elected to the Phoenix City Council in 1949 and later in 1952 was elected to United States Senate.
