Biden Still Leads in Iowa as Harris Surges
July 2, 2019 - What a difference a week makes! With last weeks Democratic presidential debates now in the rear view mirror , their impact is being felt in the latest polling out of Iowa.
Former Vice President Joe Biden who has led pretty much every Iowa poll since entering the race in April finds himself still out front with 24%. Senator Kamala Harris of California off a strong debate performance has rocketed into second place with 16%. In third place with 13% after her well received debate performance is Senator Elizabeth Harris of Massachusetts.
In suspiring fourth place with 9% is Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Since the start of 2019 , Sanders has generally been in the mid to high teens in Iowa. So a showing at 9% is a new development for Sanders. He is also no stranger to Iowa voters as Sanders scored 49.6% of the vote in the 2016 Iowa caucuses compared with 49.8% for Hillary Clinton.
In fifth place is South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg with 6%. The only other candidates reaching more than 1% are Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey and Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota both at 2%.
Coming in a 1% each are former Texas Congressman Beto O'Rourke , Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard , former Maryland Congressman John Delaney, Entrepreneur Andrew Yang and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro.
The next round of Democratic presidential debates will occur on July 30 and July 31 in Detroit Michigan.
