Trumps Tops Field In South Carolina - Hillary Nevada Firewall Stops the Bern
February 21, 2016 - It was another election victory yesterday for Republican New York Businessman Donald Trump as he won the South Carolina Republican Primary with 32.5% of the vote. In a distance second place was Senator Marco Rubio of Florida who secured 22.%5 of the vote.
As vote totals poured in and it was clear that Trump had trounced the field , a battle for second place went on for some time as Rubio and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas were locked in a tight battle for the silver medal.
Cruz followed Rubio's 22.5% of the vote with 22.3% vote. The actual vote difference between Rubio and Cruz was just about 1,000 votes. Far behind Cruz and Rubio in fourth place was former Florida Governor Jeb Bush with 7.8%. After the vote totals had come in , Bush suspended his White House campaign.
In fifth place was Ohio Governor John Kasich with 7.6 of the vote. Rounding out the field was Dr. Ben Carson with 7.2%.
Trump's election victory was all the more sweeter in that he won 44 of the delegates available to zero delegates awarded to his competitors.
Also on Saturday , the Democrats held a caucus in Nevada. Long considered one of the keys to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton quest to the nomination, she was able to best Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont 52.6% to 47.4%.
Next up on the calendar is the Republican Caucus set for Tuesday February 23 in Las Vegas and the South Carolina Democratic Primary set for Saturday February 27.
