Al Smith Campaign Buttons.  Welcome to the Al Smith campaign buttons section on New York Governor Alfred E. Smith was the 1928 Democratic Party presidential nominee. While he lost that years November election to Herbert Hoover, Al Smith holds the distinction of being the first Catholic nominated for president by a major political party. Smith’s 1928 running mate was Arkansas Senator Joe Robinson. While Al Smith campaign buttons are now part of history every four years since 1960 most presidential nominees have attended an annual gala held  in Smith's honor.
