Adlai Stevenson first won elective office in 1948 by winning the Illinois Governorship. In 1952 and 1956 Stevenson, won the Democratic Nomination for President, before losing both general elections to Dwight Eisenhower. Stevenson later served in the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations as United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 1961-1965.
