Humphrey campaign buttons section on Pictured here are Hubert Humphrey campaign buttons from his 1960 , 1968 and 1972 presidential campaigns. Humphrey was the 1968 democratic presidential nominee. He lost the November general election to Richard Nixon in one of the closest elections in presidential history. Nixon received 43.3% of the popular vote to 42.7% for Humphrey. However , Nixon far out paced Humphrey in the electoral college winning 301 to 191. Humphrey selected as his vice presidential running mate Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine. Humphrey first won political office in 1945 when he was elected the Mayor of Minneapolis.
